Whale & Star. Arts for Learning Student Exhibition during Art Basel Miami Beach

Dec 2nd through Dec 4th, 2010.

altTalented students participating in the Arts for Learning programs will showcase an exhibition of their work December 2-4 during Art Basel. A majority of the work will come from students participating in the Arts for Learning Lewis Arts Academy. Arts for Learning launched the Lewis Arts Academy to offer at-risk students with a demonstrated interest in the visual arts an opportunity for continued artistic growth.

The goals include: having positive peer role models, gaining knowledge and accessibility to the cultural resources in Miami-Dade County, and having access to the tools, resources and understanding needed to prepare for magnet high school auditions or other high school goals. The program offers support both throughout the school year and during the summer breaks and is supported by the Jonathan D. Lewis Foundation.

The initiative also works in partnership with Design and Architecture Senior High and the City of Miami Department of Parks and Recreation.

Arts for Learning extends a special thanks to Enrique Martínez Celaya for providing space and support for the exhibition. Enrique Martínez Celaya, the son of a teacher and someone who has benefited from the efforts of committed educators, believes the privilege and obligation of teaching is an integral part of his life. Whale & Star offers art education programs and workshops for the urban poor and at-risk children in Miami, a city challenged by poverty and social friction. Whale & Star works directly with children and schools as well as with and through community leaders in the allocation of resources and the shaping of our programs.
