The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation commemorates seven years of supporting emerging and mid-career artists from Latin America by presenting In Transition, its 2010 Grants and Commissions Programs exhibition on view from September 3rd through November 7th at the CIFO Art Space. This show features newly commissioned works by the award recipients of CIFO’s Grants and Commissions Program for emerging and mid-career artists. The two mid-career artists selected as recipients of the Commissions Award are Marco Maggi (Uruguay) and Elida Tessler (Brazil). The eight emerging artists who were awarded grants are: Tatiana Blass (Brazil), Eugenia Calvo (Argentina), Runo Lagomarsino (Argentina), Gisela Motta/ Leandro Lima (Brazil), Jorge Pedro Nuñez (Venezuela), Iván Puig (Mexico), and Gabriel Sierra (Colombia).
The works presented in this exhibition are the result of a year long process in which artists are nominated by CIFO’s Advisory Committee of art professionals, selected and ratified by CIFO’s Board of Directors. The artists in the exhibition are not selected based on a specific curatorial structure, but rather selected based on the investigative and innovative character of the work proposed and on the relevance of its content within the context of contemporary art culture and dialogue. Every year, CIFO invites the artist to Miami to install their artwork, participate in public programs and interact with the other recipients of the program.
As is the case with every program exhibition, the projects are not selected based on a specific curatorial discourse. Despite the fact that the new works are created in isolation of each other – by artists of varying generations and separated by geographic boundaries – there is a common thread that runs through all the works. All of them demonstrate some degree of transformation between varying states or points of discourse – a series of transitions or glimpses into a process which appears not yet finalized.
Tatiana Blass’ installation and Eugenia Calvo’s videos re-interpret the physical state of objects while Jorge Pedro Nuñez and Runo Lagomarsino’s installations reflect upon the historical trajectory and implications of abstraction and narration. Marco Maggi, Elida Tessler and Ivan Puig’s works directly use a process oriented approach to examine the passage of time and the transformative qualities of a medium itself. Although Gabriel Sierra also works with the idea of process in creating his site-specific installation, he also challenges the viewer’s perception of space by installing pieces that extend beyond the typical gallery perspective. Similarly, Gisela Motta/Leandro Lima’s manufactured landscapes create a transition in perception and make the viewer question their own sense of reality.
This, the seventh exhibition, is dedicated to the foundation’s primary focus, providing critical funding and visibility for contemporary artists from Latin America, helping to broaden global appreciation of their work while challenging stereotypical notions of Latin American art. Over the past seven years, CIFO has cemented its place as a driving force in contemporary art from Latin America. CIFO has granted awards to over fifty artists from countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Ecuador. In addition, many of the artists that have been recipients of our grants have gone on to forge important relationships with collectors, museums and galleries, and have launched international careers.
