City Beneath the Sea

Pablo Cano at MOCA North Miami From Oct 28th through Dec 23rd, 2006Hundreds of feet beneath the ocean’s surface is a magical undersea world that is the setting for City Beneath the Sea, Miami artist Pablo Cano’s new marionette production and exhibition premiering at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). The production stars Cano’s marionette sculptures and tells the story of a young girl’s quest to save an aquatic metropolis from the powers of evil. Performances run through December 23rd, 2006 and when not in performance, the marionettes and stage set will be on view as an exhibition during museum hours. Cano’s multi-faceted work is influenced by traditional marionette theater as well as the type of performance art that was practiced by the Dadaists of the 1920s. Its signature elements include found objects, kinetic sculpture, collage, and a combination of American popular music and structured improvisation. City Beneath the Sea is Pablo Cano’s ninth annual project commissioned by MOCA. It marks a departure point for him, as this is the first of his productions in which the puppeteers, perched on scaffolding high above the stage set, remain entirely hidden from the audience’s view. In past productions, they had interacted with the marionettes on stage. City Beneath the Sea was written by playwright Carmen Peláez, developed in collaboration with Pablo Cano.
