Female Hu$tle opens at Locust Projects

Opening reception: August 18, 2012. 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
From August 7 through 25, 2012.

Locust Projects is opening Female Hu$tle, a collaborative project by Heather Miller and Rosemarie Romero for the LAB (Locust Art Builders) / MFA exhibition program. Miller and Romero, both current MFA students at the University of Florida, Gainsville, present a project engaging ideas of third wave feminism and explore a complex and contradictory dialogue about objectification and identity.

Situated in the front gallery and storefront windows facing North Miami Avenue, Female Hu$tle consists of Miller’s human-scaled sculptural-photographic work Gold/Mirror, a serial representation of the female body painted gold with the face omitted and replaced by a mirror. Romero’s video and participatory work Porn Nails is a nomadic nail salon providing custom design manicures for women in exchange for conversations in relation to love, sex, and work specific to the geographic region of South Florida.

2012 marks the third year of the LAB program which provides exhibition opportunities to high school students in South Florida. In conjunction with Locust Projects’ 15 year anniversary, for the first time the program was extended to Florida-based MFA students. Miller and Romero were selected through an open call by a committee of local arts professionals.
