Devoted to its mission, Imago Art Gallery promotes contemporary art by means of fomenting systematic gatherings and strategic spaces that invite the audiences to reflect deeply about the artistic object. On this occasion, announces its new exhibition “Clara Morera, Reinaldo Arenas and The Color of Summer” (Homage), a tribute to the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas.
Considered by many as one of the most eloquent and daring literary figures of his generation, Arenas was not only a novelist, poet, essayist, and a playwright, but also a sensitive and spiritual individual beset by the forces of political and sexual repression throughout much of his life.
Inspired by The Color of Summer or The New Garden of Earthly Delights, the last book Arenas wrote before he died in 1990 and the fourth novel in his Pentagonia, the renowned Cuban artist Clara Morera will exhibit new artworks in cardstock and some masterpieces of the ’90s, courtesy of Alfredo Martínez. The show will also include the works of guest artists like Lourdes Porrata, Ariel Tejera, Fernando García, Josevelio Rodríguez, and Robert Brown.
The exhibition will open with a panel discussion titled “Reinaldo Arenas, Reality and Fiction”. The panel will feature the artist Clara Morera, a lifelong friend of Arenas and muse of his last two novels; Dr. Diana Álvarez Amell, Professor of Spanish Literature at the Seton Hall University in New Jersey, literary critic, and translator who has written articles about such important Cuban artists as Clara Morera, Arturo Cuenca, Cepp Selgas and Carmen Herrera in “Linden Lane Magazine”, edited by Belkis Cuza Malé and Ars Atelier, published by Gustavo and Zoé Valdés; and Dr. Mariela A. Gutierrez, Professor director of the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language, Member of the Executive Board of PEN Cuban Writers in Exile, conferencist, researcher, and literary critic. The panel will also feature the special participation of Alejandro Ríos, film critic, founder and director of the Cuban Film Season at Miami Dade College, and host of La Mirada Indiscreta.
Clara Morera graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Arts in Havana and is considered one of the few Cuban artists who worked with great success, tenacity, and innovation the technique of tapestry. Morera’s entire career has always been imbued with an intense desire for conceptual and technical searching (painting, tapestry, soft sculpture, drawing, and multimedia installation) that connects her pieces to the Afro-Cuban tradition. Many of her works are housed in prestigious and important arts institutions worldwide such as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Cuban Cultural House in Prague, The Museum of Modern Art De Baie Saint Paul in Quebec, the Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C., the Discovery Museum in Connecticut, the Rubin and Shelley Collection in New York, among others. Presently, her works are displayed in the inter-museums exhibition Ajiaco at the Newark Museum, New Jersey.
