Laberinto de Miradas / Labyrinth of Glances

CCE Miami and MDC Galery System. From Feb 5th through 9th, 2009.  Centro Cultural Español. Miami ArtsStarting February 5th, the Cultural Center of Spain (CCE) and MDC Gallery System present the first Edition of “Laberinto de Miradas”. This particular show of the series, entitled Identidades y Fronteras en Iberoamérica, (Identities and Borders in Ibero America) aims to promote documentary production made in Ibero America in connection with identity and migratory flows.

The “Laberinto de Miradas” project consists of three itinerary exhibitions that will travel for more than three years around several Latin American and European countries, featuring the crossed views of documentary artists that work with social subjects. The central axis is to present the exhibitions along with workshops and parallel activities thus creating a social network project between the participating countries. “Laberinto de Miradas” wants to generate a current of information between all members of the Ibero American communities by means of a network project that exchanges images, ideas and experiences.

Selected works for this first exhibition, that has already visited México and Antigua, include images by 39 artists that highlight the migratory and border concepts in a context that is becoming more and more globalized. The intention of these pieces is to generate a visual reflection on the amalgam of identities that melt in Ibero America and Spain, on the weakest minorities with the idea of potentiating and fostering their important role they play in their societies.

Claudi Carreras, the show’s curator says, “after traveling in 18 Latin American countries y contacting more that 260 photo reporters, it became obvious to me that the tradition and renovation of such tradition of documentary photography is becoming huge. That is why one of the main objectives is obtaining and editorial product on contemporary documentary photography in Latin America with the highest quality, thus creating a visual memory that incorporates the debate of cultural contemporary creation”.

The other two exhibitions, Fricciones y Conflictos en Iberoamérica (Frictions and conflicts in Ibero America) and Colectivos de fotografía en Iberoamérica (Photography Collectives in Ibero America) have already been presented in Peru and Brazil. Please visit www.laberintodemiradas.net if you wish to follow up on the shows itinerary and see the activities surrounding the Project.
In Miami, the exhibition will be supplemented with two photography and video Workshops with Maya Goded and CIA de foto, as well as a conference with participating photographers and Claudi Carreras, the curator of the project.
