University of Miami. Interkinetic Art of Joe Abbati

Oct 9th through 22nd, 2010.

altThe Department of Art and Art History, in the College of Arts and Sciences at UM, presents the work of Master of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate student Joe Abbati in Interkinetic. Abbati’s installations are the culmination of 20 years experience in music, technology and metaphysical inquiry. Greatly influenced by 20th century proponents of “new” and “total” art, his work relies on the simultaneity of force-relations, light, sound and motion.

“I am not satisfied with the static principle of conventional art,” the artist states. “As a contemporary artist, I am empowered by the tools available today – electricity and electric light, sensors, digital microcontrollers, lasers, audio synthesizers, video projectors; the apparatus that make dynamic art possible.”

Abbati aims to create simple enclosed systems of dynamic interactions within the gallery, to make audiences conscious of the interconnected, active processes occurring outside the gallery. In celebration of the exhibition’s opening, there will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, Oct 9th from 6 – 10 PM. Other viewing times can be arranged by appointment.
