World Class Boxing / The Collection of Debra & Dennis Scholl

Chan and Channer. From Feb 14th through Apr 3rd, 2009.  World Class Boxing World Class Boxing presents an exhibition of Paul Chan titled 2ndLight, a digital projection that creates a vast image of cyclical destruction and rebirth and spreads across floor like light falling through windows. In the opening minutes, the projection is a plain oblong of color, which gradually fades from blue to green to red. The whipping branches of the tree are rhymed in the fluttering banners of a largely unseen army marching left to right across the bottom of the projection; adrift humans spin down from the sky, and timbers of some off screen destruction scatter and whirl upwards as the light fades.

Paul Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1973, raised in Nebraska and lives and works in New York.  He received an MFA from Bard College in 2002 and a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Recent solo exhibitions include: New Museum, New York, 2008; Serpentine Gallery, London, 2007; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 2007; Portikus, 2006; Galleria Massimo De Carlo, Milan, 2006; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 2005; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2005 and The Renaissance Society, 2009.

Also opening on February 14th there is the show Works Folding Out Of And Into The Collection Of by artist Alice Channer. Channer creates formalist sculptures influenced by quotations from fashion and design. The wall-mounted sculpture Untitled (Bangles) (2008) is comprised of variously sized bracelets that are hung from a dowel, as if it were an arm extending from the gallery wall. The New Look (2008), consists of a pair of fabric knife-edge pleats that cascades down the wall to rest on the gallery floor, resembling a scarf draped over a shoulder. Channer’s work frequently locates details on the edges rather than in the center of her pieces giving the impression of parts left to signify a whole, with anthropomorphic touches underscore the suggestion of an awkward intimacy within the space.

Alice Channer was born in the UK in 1977 and currently lives and works in London. In 2009 she will have a solo exhibition at The Approach, London and participated in the Hayward Gallery touring show Quiet Revolution. Channer graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 2008 with an MA in Sculpture; this followed her BA in Fine Art, Studio Practice and Contemporary Critical Studies from Goldsmiths College, London, in 2006.  She is represented in London by The Approach.
