Ernesto Capdevila’s The Game at Albizu University

On view during Miami Art Week through December 10th
Ernesto Capdevila, The Victory, 2016, Polychrome wood, 70" x 72" x 28"

Albizu University and Patricia Jimenez Art Space present the exhibition THE GAME, featuring works by Ernesto Capdevila. THE GAME consists of a selection of Capdevila’s most recent series of sculptures and gets its title from one of the pieces on display which depicts a golfer swinging at human heads instead of golf balls. Capdevila calls these works “stuff” instead of “sculptures” because they are the result of an empirical process of creation in which experimentation predominates. The works that comprise THE GAME are characterized as being of large and medium format, featuring figures with elongated extremities and large feet. In their creation, Capdevila concentrated mainly on the details of the faces, hands, and some clothing, leaving the rest of the body merely defined and outlined without overworking it.

Ernesto Capdevila was born in Havana, Cuba in 1970. He graduated in 1992 from the Design Institute of Havana. Capdevila continued his education in the arts at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro, also in Havana, graduating in 1997. Capdevila worked from 1993-1999 as a member of the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana, before immigrating to Miami, Florida in 1999, where he continues to reside and maintain his studio. Ernesto Capdevila’s work has been, and continues to be, shown in galleries throughout Europe, North, South, and Central America, as well as the Caribbean.
