Miami Art NewsFairchild Tropical Botanic Garden currently displays an exhibition of Monumental Sculpture by Colombian master Fernando Botero. Known for signature pieces that portray rotund figures with exaggerated proportions, sculptures by the famed Latin American Master Fernando Botero are on loan from Gary Nader Fine Art, a Miami gallery specializing in Latin American, modern and contemporary art. The Botero Collection at Fairchild is on display through May 31st, 2008 at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables. “We are thrilled to share the work of such a celebrated artist,” said Bruce Greer, Fairchild’s president of the board of trustees. “South Florida has a particular affection for Latin American art, and Botero is among the best.”

The outdoor exhibition will feature ten of Botero’s bronze sculptures, some reaching more than 14 feet high, and portraying the artist’s signature human and animal corpulent figures. Pieces from this exhibition have been shown in the world’s major art centers, including Paris, Tokyo and Madrid.

Botero, born in 1932 in Medellin, Colombia, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest artists. After completing his studies in art in Madrid, Florence and Mexico, Botero quickly rose through the ranks of international artists with exhibitions spanning the globe, the first in Bogota in 1951. In 1992, Botero became the first non-French artist to exhibit on Paris’ famed Champs-Elysees, a career highlight.

Botero’s sculptures, like his paintings, are characterized by their elegant and highly stylized forms and are known and appreciated throughout the world. Where some artists use color, Botero uses volume to the extreme. In doing so, he manages to capture a sense of scale, humanity, sensuality and humor in his work.
