New exhibition and Florida Jewish History Month Celebration From Jan 7th through Mar 11th, 2007The Jewish Museum of Florida opens the exhibition Bonim: Jewish Developers Building Florida and Building Community at the time it celebrates the fourth annual observance of Florida Jewish History Month. The reception for both events will take place on January 7th, 2007 at the museum located in Miami Beach. The theme for this year’s observance is the historic preservation of Miami Beach’s first synagogue, Congregation Beth Jacob. An exhibition will feature the history of the eighty year-old congregation that played a critical role in Miami Beach Jewish History. Beginning in 1929, they occupied the structure at 311 Washington Avenue and in 1936 moved into the adjacent building, designed by Henry Hohauser, at 301 Washington Avenue, which now houses the museum. For the opening event, the museum invited Florida Senator Gwen Margolis who will speak about the legislation enacted to create FJHM. The keynote speakers for the celebration are Ted and Jonathan Nelson whose family has been involved with Congregation Beth Jacob since 1933 and is immensely versed in the history and personalities of the Congregation.
