Modeled after the Ecole du Louvre, in France the Art History Institute, a collaboration of Bass Museum of Art and New World School of the Arts (NWSA), will provide an intensive one-year art history seminar to every first year student in NWSA’s Visual Arts College Program. As of September 2011, 40 students will come to the Bass Museum on Miami Beach once a week for a two-hour course taught by Dr. Adrienne von Lates, Director of Education at the Museum.
The program will focus on the art history of Western Civilization, covering the wide span from Pre-Historic times through the present day. Held within the museum’s galleries this seminar will draw on the museum’s permanent collection of Antiquities, Renaissance and Baroque works of art.
This seminar will be incorporated into New World School of the Arts’ existing WARP (Workshop for Art Research and Practice) curriculum, grouping periods of eras and artists in thematic clusters and ideas. Rather than concentrating on rote memorization of artists and dates, this seminar will encourage dialogue and interpretation.
The Bass Museum continues to “inspire and educate by exploring the connections between our permanent collection and contemporary art”. Fundamental to this mission statement is the museum’s educational commitment to expose students and the general public to art from the past and to make connections to contemporary art.
