Open Doors presents Young Blood, an exhibition by New World School of the Arts (NWSA) high school and college students. Showcasing 20 pieces and curated by participating artist Michelle Gomez, the exhibit will expose students to a commercial platform, literally opening doors by providing an opportunity to share their visions with the boutique’s visitors. Young Blood runs today through April 30th, 2008, and the reception is scheduled for Friday, April 11th at 6:00 p.m. at Open Doors, located at 7300 Biscayne Boulevard. This event is free and open to the public.
Young Blood is based upon relationships: connections between the artists and their works, the works and their environment, and the artists and their environment. Students explore a variety of mediums ranging from traditional realism and abstract expressionism to contemporary genres. A daring and colorful collection, pieces were carefully selected to complement Open Doors’ furniture.
The elegant yet urbane space of Open Doors is characterized by a Tropical Contemporary and Transitional style of clean, natural lines interspersed with vivid accessories including vases from Indonesia and hand screen-printed pillows. The installation managed by NWSA allowed students to experience hanging their works in a retail store, making unique considerations for interiors, client relations and pricing.
“My goal is to expose young emerging artists to a professional scene,” said Gomez. “I want to show that it’s okay to share your personal thoughts and concepts. It’s what an artist is all about: being bold and free.”
Hailing from the NWSA’s Visual Arts program and under the direction of Brookbank, participating artists include Roman Arevalo, Michelle Gomez, Lisette Gonzalez, Miah Jones, Masataka Kagawa, Sheena Klimoski, Danielle Levine, Daniela Londono, Alexander Moir, Chottip Nimla-or, Micheal Okey and Lisa Torske.
