Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art presents A Ringing in the Ears, Brooklyn artist Chris Fennell’s first solo exhibit in Miami, Florida. Fennell creates mixed media collages whose organic and geometric patterns reference nature, culture, mathematics, architecture, and psychedelic states of consciousness.
Fennell’s medium is paint and cut paper: circles and lines overlap dizzyingly in skin-like multiple layers. His art is simultaneously minimalist in its simplicity and maximalist in its persistent physicality and hypnotic repetition. The title references a melancholy Lao Tzu quote regarding the dizzying hullaballoo of life:
“…There comes a time when beauty and riches no longer answer the needs of the heart, and when a surfeit of sound and color becomes a weariness to the eyes and a ringing in the ears.”
The works invoke various solutions for what ails: internal escape to a synthetic and psychedelic un-nature, pantheistic immersion in the symbolic nature of our minds, violent catharsis. Their nervous energy echoes the probing subject matter and the unease beneath their crafty surfaces.
Chris Fennell was born in Burlington, Vermont and has lived in Brooklyn since 1992. He has a B.A. in both English and Studio Art from the University of Vermont, and an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is represented by Newman Popiashvili Gallery in New York and has also shown in Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, and elsewhere. His work is represented in many private and public collections. A Ringing In The Ears is his first solo exhibition at Carol Jazzar’s in Miami.
Carol Jazzar Gallery is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and by appointment. Exhibit runs through June 12, 2011.
