Miami Dade College's Art Gallery Season

altNearly three hundred emerging and renowned artists from around the world will be featured by Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Art Gallery System (AGS) during exhibitions this upcoming academic year. The 2010 – 2011 season will present an extensive collection of contemporary art, while continuing to serve as a vehicle for enhancing education.

The new AGS season kicks off in September at the Freedom Tower at MDC with the Past is History – Future is Mystery exhibition, which takes a look at totalitarianism across the world. Other major exhibitions will include Sculpt Miami during Art Basel and smART exhibition and art sale in commemoration of MDC’s 50th anniversary, among others. Several installations are being added in the coming weeks. 

The College’s AGS is a completely integrated museum-classroom-conservatory network that offers visual arts in every possible format. It has more than 55,000 square feet of exhibition space in its galleries, public art spaces and MDC’s Freedom Tower in downtown Miami.

Presenting more than 24 projects and exhibitions, the AGS follows the latest trends in contemporary art by new generations of South Florida artists and College students, as well as its mission to bring a global perspective of art through exhibitions of relevant artists. The AGS also continues to include as an important part of its programming exhibitions that reference key moments in the history of art. MDC gallery exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Past is History – Future is Mystery
September – October 2010
Freedom Tower

One of the most compelling political issues today is the question of totalitarianism and the effect of these governments and regimes on its citizens and the world. Artists continue to create powerful images that draw attention to these abuses. This mixed-media exhibition deals with repressive issues in the artists’ own countries and cultures of origin. They include Pablo Trejo, Alejandro Mendoza, Juan Si-Gonzalez, Maritza Molina, Ramon Williams, Cesar Beltran, Antuan and Nelson Garrido.

2010 Art Faculty Exhibition
September – October 2010
Wolfson, Kendall, North, InterAmerican, Homestead Campuses

AGS and the Arts and Philosophy departments of Wolfson, Kendall, North, InterAmerican and Homestead Campuses will host the opening of Manifestations on different dates during the month of September at each of the campus galleries. Manifestations will include drawings, paintings, photography and mixed-media art works.

The Art of Instinct: Medicine and Art
September – November 2010
Medical Campus

The first art exhibition at the Medical Center Campus traces the history of medicine through a selection of 20 specially produced posters showcasing the great discoveries, controversies, blunders, deceptions and tragedies in medicine from the beginning of recorded history. The exhibition will include literature by Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Voltaire, Oscar Wilde, Beethoven, among others.

Ways of Looking
September – November 2010
Hialeah Art Lounge

Through a small selection of artworks and explanatory text panels, this exhibition works as guide to the visual arts designed to provide a comprehensive view of art, moving from the analytic study of these specific works to a consideration of broad principles and technical matters. Four carefully selected artworks afford an excellent sampling of the wide range of experience awaiting the explorer of art.

Sculpt Miami
November – December 2010
Wolfson Campus and North Campus

Sculpt Miami opens in December during Art Basel. Located in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, the exhibition combines the works of more than 30 internationally known sculptors with other exciting cultural events. This year, Sculpt Miami will expand part of its exhibition to MDC North Campus, recognized for its Sculpture Park.

smART
November 2010 – January 2011
Freedom Tower at MDC

With an exceptionally vast roster of international artists, this unique exhibition and art sale to benefit MDC students and its education programs will be presented as part of the college’s 50th anniversary celebration. smART will provide first-hand opportunities to view and acquire the work of a group of talented contemporary artists.

reGeneration 2
November 2010 – January 2011
Centre Gallery, Wolfson Campus

Following the success of 2006’s reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow, also presented by MDC, reGeneration 2: Tomorrow’s Photographers Today turns the spotlight yet again on the next generation of photography’s potential stars. Through over 200 images, this remarkable survey – the only anthology of its kind – showcases the inspiring creativity and ingenuity of 80 up-and-coming photographic artists.

By Design
November 2010 – January 2011
Homestead Art Space

By Design is a public art project that raises questions about graphic and industrial design in a globalized age. The project inspects symbols and artifacts related to the aesthetically oriented design consumed by ten percent of the world population versus the functional design for the other ninety. The project also explores how designed objects might be re-imagined in an era of proliferating global crossings.
