An exhibition by Jonathan Huxley

Waltman Ortega Fine Art presents “Absolute Zero”, a solo exhibition of paintings by UK artist Jonathan Huxley comprised of the artist’s latest oil on canvas paintings from his ongoing “Figurescapes” series.
In these works, Huxley, uses the human figures – walkers, dancers, figure skaters – as the sole motif in the manner (which became his signature) that allows him to capture, or “freeze”, the movement – some “faster”, some “slower”.
Regarding the title of the show, the artist refers us to Wikipedia: “Absolute zero is the coldest possible temperature (−459.67° on the Fahrenheit scale). It is the temperature at which entropy reaches its minimum value. The laws of thermodynamics state that absolute zero cannot be reached using only thermodynamic means… Scientists have achieved temperatures extremely close to absolute zero, where matter exhibits quantum effects such as superconductivity and superfluidity.”
“In these new paintings white (background) forms the arena”, states the artists; “The figure I use is akin to a mantra. A repetitive statement or word or sound used in the process of meditation. The human form is a potent image and needs no explanation or definition. The theme is movement and fluidity. Though white is indeed a colour, for me it is a neutral pure base on which to freeze the action. Fluidity is as far as I get on a journey to achieve superfluidity (if you like). Nothing fixed, constant motion forcing the eye to continually scan finding no fixed focal point yet guided by an inevitable geometry. The aim is to create pure rhythm and movement in a frozen scene…probably as impossible as achieving Absolute Zero.”
Jonathan Huxley was born in 1965. He has Bachelor of Art Honors degree from Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham, and Royal Academy Diploma from the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He currently lives and works in London.
