Galerie Hélène Lamarque

By Manuela Gabaldon

Our city of Miami characterizes itself by its diverse population and the constant arrival of new and eye-opening cultural organizations hoping to call our home their own. Over the last few years, Wynwood Art District has become the prime location for any gallery eager to participate in its pioneering efforts. Galerie Hélène Lamarque, an impressive and established gallery with a fifteen-year run and counting in Paris, France, has recently opened its doors on our side of the world. I visited Galerie Hélène Lamarque on a Tuesday afternoon and had the pleasure of experiencing the space with owner and founder, Hélène Lamarque herself, who will return to Paris in a few months, leaving the gallery in the good hands of associate Chadd Kortge, who also lead me through the space’s eclectic collection.

On my guided walk-through of Galerie Hélène Lamarque, I noticed the space and its personnel share our community’s goal of introducing the people of Miami to talents from different parts of the world. Lamarque’s mission is not only to incorporate already established foreign artists into the Miami art scene, but also to introduce new and promising talents in the months to come.

Beyond the Body: An Inaugural Exhibition, opened on December, 2008 during Miami’s art fairs, filling the gallery’s freshly painted walls with the works of reputable foreign artists such as French artist Thierry Farcy, Indian artists Bose Krishnamachari and Akbar Padamsee, Afghani artist Barmak Akram, and Portuguese artist José de Guimarães, along with others who form part of the gallery’s expanding roster.

This inaugural group-show focuses on the representation of the human body and its connection to the immortal soul. Kortge’s enlightening description of the exhibit’s individual pieces and their specific philosophies guarantees the spectator understanding and enjoyment of the collective show.

Lamarque and Kortge are confident in the community’s positive response to the new space and are eager for it to quickly integrate itself into the Wynwood Gallery Walk, when more than 40 galleries and studios in the Wynwood Art District open their doors to the public for an evening of art, culture, and intellectual fulfillment. Galerie Hélène Lamarque’s open space, welcoming staff, and charming terrace, currently home to a stunning installation by Thierry Farcy, is the perfect place for a “gallery-walker” to unwind and process the evening’s viewings and finds.
