Thread Bare Kulchur Shock (Public Female #1) by Eurydice recently opened on at the Steve Martin Studio, located at 66 NE 40th Street in Miami Design District. In her solo exhibit, “Thread Bare Kulchur Shock”, Eurydice combines embroidery, drawing, authentic vintage posters on canvas and on paper to bridge high and pop cultural icons and archetypes in an irrational exuberance of satire, parody, nudity, and the ancient craft of stitchery.
“I am proud to announce this solo exhibit, which represents a new direction for my gallery into more experimental art with an international perspective. Eurydice is based in Athens and NYC as well as Miami and she brings a European sensibility and a literary, deeply intellectual background to her fearless artistic expression. This is a bold show and it marks a new commitment for our gallery to artists working on the aesthetic edge,” said Steve Martin, owner of Steve Martin Studio.
Born on Lesbos, Greece, Eurydice received a BA in Fine Arts from Bard College, where she studied with Roy Lichtenstein; an MA in creative writing from the University of Colorado in Boulder, where she also studied at Naropa Institute with Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs; an MA in Art History and an MFA in Creative Writing from Brown University where she later taught as a professor.
Along with working on her art, she has published books with Scribner (Satyricon USA: A Journey Across the New Sexual Frontier. New York, London, Sydney, Singapore, 2000), Virago Press (f/32: The Second Coming. London, New York: 1993), and the Fiction Collective, all widely translated. She has participated in numerous art shows in Europe and the US and shot two documentary films in India. With hand-stitching as her medium of expression and rebellion, Eurydice’s subversive art connects her with her ancestors and generations of silenced women for whom she hopes to speak.
