CU-1 Gallery, a new contemporary photo space in downtown Miami, opens its doors with Look at Me, a group show on view through the summer. Look at Me features work by five international artists – Simon Emmett, Billy & Hells, Tina Luther, Christopher Thomas, and Roger Weber – all shown in Miami for the first time.
Most of the artists included in the exhibition produce commercial art as well as fine art, and the works in the show, while strikingly diverse, largely inhabit the intersection where fine art and fashion meet, resulting in engaging, sophisticated images that demand the reader to look…and look again.
Look at Me artist and creative director of British GQ Paul Solomons, who often works with celebrities, explains his collaboration with Simon Emmett that is on view in the show as pushing beyond expected ideals of fashion and beauty: “With this project we have laid bare the constraints of working to often diluted creative direction and obvious subject matter…we are trying to push what is acceptable as beautiful. We want the viewer to look and keep looking and appreciate the work for its result rather than its subject matter.”
Look at Me is CU-1 Gallery’s inaugural exhibition. “We are thrilled to be opening a space for contemporary photography in downtown Miami. There are not many venues dedicated to photography in the city, and none with our emphasis. Our goal with CU-1 is to introduce the Miami audience to the art of incredible photographers, most of them European, whose work is generally new to Miami,” explains Stephan Goettlicher, one of the founders of CU-1. “We are very excited to have created this opportunity to celebrate contemporary photography and share it with Miami.”
