Kevin Bruk Gallery

From Dec 2nd, 2008 through Jan 17th, 2009.  Kevin Bruk Gallery. Miami Art GalleriesKevin Bruk Gallery presents the group exhibition Deal or No Deal featuring the work Mika Tajima. Deal or No Deal examines a field of transactions and negotiations, employing elements of geometric formalism to delineate various positions of inclusion and exclusion, participation and observation, and the particular and universal. The circle, line, and square in its proliferation enter into a loaded visual order.

In this exhibition of sculpture and print arrangements, intersecting circles, shaded areas, and parallel stripes form abstract Venn diagrams illustrating uncontainable combinations of relationships and differences (insiders and outsiders). A series of interlocking, modular screens divide the gallery space allowing partial views through its perforated mirrored surfaces.  Derived from Bauhaus design forms, this potentially ever expandable and interchangeable slotted wall structure performs like sofa sectionals or office cubicle dividers, defining the location of transaction and its obstructions.

Here sculpture and print become barricades, revealing and excluding even within its own construction. Layers of plexiglas over silkscreen and woodblock prints blur, tint, reflect, block complete views of the work while other select parts are revealed through circular cutouts.

Formal devices and elements of interior design continuously destabilize the work’s identity and function. The artwork frame is both the framing device and the subject itself, allowing it to masquerade as sculpture. A dysfunctional ladder acting as a prop is now a makeshift exhibition sign.

David Shaw New Work. From Apr 12th through May 31st, 2008

Kevin Bruk Gallery. Miami Art Galleries
Kevin Bruk Gallery is present the gallery’s second solo exhibition of work by New York artist David Shaw. Nearly three years since his previous exhibition in the gallery, sculptor David Shaw continues to excavate the seemingly endless layers of biology, physics, nature, and technology. As content becomes denser, the engineering and aesthetics of his sculpture become equally complex and cohesive. Shaw seems to employ a fourth dimension through the use of holographic laminate that provokes the viewer to adapt to new and unfamiliar visual sensations, yet the work manages to remain traditionally sculptural.
